Purpose
For students to acquire knowledge and understanding of how nursing can provide support to people facing vulnerable mental health situations. For students to acquire an understanding of nursing in relation to the recovery process. For students to acquire understanding of key factors impacting on the professional relationship between nursing students / nurses and patients.
Content
Content of the theory teaching and learning: · Milieu therapy · Recovery-based approaches · Person-centred care in psychiatric nursing · The Psychiatric Care Act (Psykiatrilógin) · The concept of autonomy in relation to use of force and exercise of power in psychiatry · Trauma-informed care · Theory on professional relations · Communication with patients, next of kin and colleagues based on communication theory · Psychopathology and dual diagnoses · Medication: antipsychotics, anxiolytics, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and CNS stimulants · Including patients and next of kin The contents of clinical teaching is: · Students provide nursing care to patients who are committed on psychiatric hospital wards, in residential homes and in their own homes · There is one required study activity during this period
Learning and teaching approaches
The learning and teaching of the theory component alternates between lectures, dialogues, group work and self-study. The clinical learning and teaching approach used is collaborative study. Collaborative study means that students partake in and practice nursing together with qualified nurses. Students observe, describe and analyse nursing problems and questions, and also provide nursing care to selected patients. The portfolio is used as a tool for reflection, evaluation and assessment.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: · determine nursing care needs, provide care and assess the care provided · provide nursing-practice arguments for the care provided based on the most up-to-date knowledge about nursing · document nursing using the documentation tool available at the place of education · explain symptoms associated with mental illnesses · explain health promoting, preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitation care for persons with mental health conditions · describe recovery as a concept and process · reflect on and administrate medication to persons under the student’s care · describe the key principles of the psychiatric care legislation in force · communicate professionally with individuals and next of kin · inform, guide and teach patients, next of kin and colleagues · interact with the individual and next of kin demonstrating closeness, understanding and respect for them · reflect on their own psychological reactions in interactions with patients · Reflection on the professional relationship in selected practice situations · reflect on the care provided in selected practice situations both orally and in writing · cooperate within the profession and across professions · take responsibility for own learning and assess own learning needs in relation to the future education process
Assessment method
Attainment level assessment. At the end of the course students are assessed against the learning outcomes for the clinical component. This assessment is equivalent to an internal examination.
