Purpose
For students to acquire knowledge about children, youth and families from a physical, psychological and social perspective.
For students to acquire knowledge about obstetric and paediatric nursing.
For students to develop their ability to work scientifically based on a project focussing on a clinical nursing research question related to children and family.

· Pedagogical considerations in relation to informing, guiding and educating children and families

· In vitro diagnostics, abortion, insemination, etc. from a social and ethical perspective
· Sexuality: focussed on puberty
· Evidence-based nursing practice
· Theories on transition and transition in relation to becoming a parent and having a child with a health condition

Contents of the clinical component:
· Observing practice in the field of obstetric and paediatric nursing
· Observing the work of health visitors and performing selected tasks within the remit of health visitors
Learning and teaching approaches
Teaching and learning is organised as alternating lectures, dialogue, group work and self-study.
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes Students who successfully complete the module can demonstrate ability to:
· Describe fertilisation and embryo development and potential deviations
· Explain obstetric deviations and symptoms of illness
· Describe nursing of newborns and premature infants
· Explain the special condition of pregnant women in relation to physical, mental and social reactions to pregnancy and childbirth
· Explain typical mental and physical development of children and teenagers, as well as potential variations
· Explain pathophysiological changes in selected paediatric conditions
· Explain paediatric nursing based on the needs of children with medical conditions and their family
· Explain selected crisis theory and potential coping mechanisms of children and families in crisis
· Explain considerations in relation to informing, guiding and teaching children and families
· Reflect on professional communication with children and their families
· Explain the potential significance of culture for nursing
· Explain selected concepts and theories in sociology
· Describe national and international health policy measures
· Explain characteristics of post-modern society and describe the significance they can have for families
· Reflect on research questions relating to the living conditions of children and families in contemporary society
· Discuss ethical questions/dilemmas in relation to in vitro diagnostics, abortion and insemination.
