Froðskaparsetur Visit to Eysturoy tunnel
On the 24th October 2017, Gethin Wyn Roberts took first year students from the Energy Engineering course to visit the Eysturoy Tunnel project, at Hvitanes.  Teitur Samuelsen (CEO) and Einar Brimnes (Project Maganer) hosted the visit.  We were given a detailed presentation about the planned tunnel, and progress to date.  The presentation also included the tunnelling method used, as well as the background geology boreholes that had been carried out, and resulting course the tunnel is planned to take.

The tunnel is simultaneously being excavated from Strendur and Hvitanes.  At the time of the visit, the Strendur excavation had already progressed 1300m and the Hvitanes end had progressed 1113m.   The total length of the tunnel will be 11 kilometres.

We were also taken into the tunnel, and shown the drill and blasting tunnelling procedure involved. We are all extremely grateful to both Teitur and Einar for their time and input to our visit.  This is a massive engineering project, and very inspirational to us all.
