Endamál: At læra studentarnar grundleggjandi numeriskar metodur til loysn av verkfrøðiuppgávum og vísindaligum uppgávum við brúk av telduamboðinum Matlab/Octave.

Evni: Ikki-linjuligar líkningar: Newton, bisektión og fastpunkt metodur. Approksimatión av funktiónum og data: interpolatión, spline approksimatión og minstu-kvadrat metodur. Numerisk differentiering og integratión: trapez, Gauss og Simpson formlar. Sambundar linjuligar líkningar: LU faktorisering, iterativar metodur, Richardson og gradient metodur. Eginvirði og eginvektorar. Ordinerar differentiallíkningar: Euler og Crank-Nicolson metodur, prediktión og korrektion, system av differentiallíkningum. Numeriskar metodur til randvirðisproblem. MATLAB/Octave: Markamót umhvørvi. Notatión, syntaksur og operatiónir. Útrokningarmannagongdir. Forritan. Grafikkur og datagreining. Import og eksport.

Undirvísing: Fyrilestrar og uppgávur. Venjing við forritinum Matlab/Octave.

Døming: Kravdar stóruppgávur. Skrivlig próvtøka í fýra tímar. Hjálparamboð loyvd. Próvtøkuúrslit sambært galdandi próvtalsstiga.

Numerical Analysis with Matlab/Octave

Prerequisites: Course no 3001.08

Objective: To give the students an introduction to numerical methods for solving engineering and scientific problems using the MATLAB/Octave software.

Subject: Solution of nonlinear equations: Newton's, bisection and fixed point methods. Approximation of functions and data: interpolation, spline approximation, and least squares methods. Numerical differentiation and integration: trapezoidal and Gauss formulas, and Simpson’s rules. Simultaneous linear equations: LU factorization, iterative methods, Richardson and gradient methods. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Ordinary differential equations: Euler and Crank-Nicolson methods, prediction and correction, systems of differential equations. Numerical mthods for boundary-value problems. MATLAB/Octave: Interface environment. Notation, syntax, and operations. Computational procedures. Programming. Graphics and data analysis. Import and export.

Teaching: Lectures and exercises. Training with Matlab/Octave software.

Evaluation: Mandatory exercise reports. Four-hour written examination. Auxiliary exam material allowed. The existing grade scale will be used.
