Academic Journal on Human Rights in the Faroe Islands
Fróðskapur has published a special issue of its academic journal Fróðskaparrit titled Human Rights in the Faroe Islands.
This issue is edited by Erika Anne Hayfield and Heini í Skorini and contains seven articles by 14 authors covering diverse topics. These include the situation of individuals with mental illnesses in the Faroe Islands during the 19th and 20th centuries, the historical development of gender equality legislation, and attitudes toward abortion in the Faroe Islands.
The editors write the following in the preface to the issue:
- The inspiration for this special issue stems from the significance of human rights as a foundation for justice, fairness, and the well-being of citizens, as well as for the functioning of institutions in Faroese society. In particular, studies of human rights emphasize the protection of vulnerable groups within the community.
- Our goal with this special issue is to analyze human rights and provide knowledge that can promote awareness, education, justice, and social responsibility, potentially leading to necessary policies or legislative changes. However, all reflections on human rights, which prescribe rules or ideals, are contentious and truly spark disagreement. This is because the implementation of human rights involves fundamental ethical, cultural, and religious considerations on which there is no universal consensus: What constitutes a just society? What is a dignified life? What responsibilities does the state have toward the individual? And where are the boundaries between human rights and human obligations?
The special issue on human rights spans 188 pages and is available digitally on the publisher's website. The entire document or individual articles can be downloaded.
